Organic farm shop

Programme
The sales area has been set up in the open space under the framework, divided into three asymmetric naves: one under a roof terrace, the other two together under a large pitched roof. At the rear, the service areas connect with the other farm buildings. Various offices have been housed under the roof, connected by a footbridge that starts in the framework used for the shop.
About
Henri Pâque, one of the pioneers of organic farming in Wallonia, has been growing farm products for more than 30 years. Since 1977, this family initiative has steadily evolved and grown. While steering away from any dogmatism, the project sets out to promote the use of healthy techniques and materials that are sustainable for health and the environment. Thus, three agricultural materials are used: wood, straw and earth. The main structure and the framework are in local softwood, with priority given to solid timber. The internal partitioning of the stocking and working areas is in masonry, while the entire envelope is enclosed by walls of straw bales, pre-assembled in wooden frames and covered on both sides with an earth plaster. The exterior cladding is in larch and the joinery in Douglas fir. Two-thirds of the energy needed to heat the sales area are directly supplied by heat recovered from the engines of the cold rooms. Natural light is introduced thanks to the glass strips inserted into the top and bottom side of the large protruding roof and by a bay that provides framed views over the nearby orchard. Vents protect the retail space from direct sunlight.
