Wayez public areas

Programme: Within the framework of the sustainable district contract «Biestebroeck», five public spaces have been designated for redevelopment. These include the Place de la Résitance, the square in front of Ecole n°13 and its sports field, which will be shared with the neighbourhood, Rauter Park, and the new bicycle / pedestrian extension of the Rue du Bronze.

About: The targetted publics are very different: children in the schoolyard, users of Rauter Park, regulars in Place de la Résistance, groups of seniors on the paths of Rauter Park, or parents waiting in Rue du Bronze. At the bus stop on Wayez Street square, all audiences used to wait, patiently standing, in a very urban environment. At Place de la Résistance, on market and activities days, all generations mix. When school is finished, the square turns into a playground where children climb on the benches and play ball. The Rauter Park, which was under-equipped, has been extensively equipped with games, sports elements and rest areas. Thus, for each project, we used swings which can be used in a playful way or to sit down and relax. A concept that we used on the whole ensemble: Rauter Park, along the sports field, in a new playground, Place de la Résistance, on the square in Wayez Street, etc. The goal is to give coherence to the ensemble of interventions. It is also also an opportunity to rethink the use of certain spaces in order to revitalize them and favor the mix of populations and generations. Finally, we should note the increase in biodiversity, the active management of run-off water, the communitisation of the sports field between the school and the district and a new pedestrian/cycle path, equipped with ditches, which will link the district to the canal
