Rotor represents Belgium's French Community at the 12th International Architecture Exhibition of the Biennale di Venezia, Italy. The exhibition Usus/Usures occupies the Belgian pavilion at the Giardini. The project explores wear as a reaction to use in architecture. The exhibition is the result of an intensive collaborative investigation carried out in Belgium during the months prior to the event. It analyses wear as a material phenomenon and as an agent that can influence behaviour. It approaches wear not as a problem in itself, the result of an error of conception that must be avoided at all costs, but as an inevitable process that permits reflection on use and the practice of construction. The materials exhibited were all collected in Belgium. For practical reasons, Rotor turned to buildings which were transformed relatively suddenly from full function to a state of disuse. We looked for materials that were common and contemporary, showing mild wear as a result of moderate use. During disassembly and transportation, we avoided any alterations that were not caused by the original users. This project was nourished by the contributions of several co- researchers involved in the process of reflection between March and July 2010. They contributed to setting up background stories by locating evocative situations and taking the photographs exhibited.
