Programme
Three apartments in a building carcass
About
These three apartments are like autonomous entities, not linked to a building, and even less to a context. The architecture is, in the first place, an intervention within the unit. In each of them, this intervention is similar in nature but different. A single ans specific element is introduced to divide the space and prepare it for use: a beam that groups the wet rooms and equipment, intersecting walls with a pivot door, a central but invisible shower room. This intervention produces the same program every time: kitchen-dining room, living room area, two bedrooms and a bathroom. This standard configuration does not seem to have been imposed on the given plan. It appears to be the result of the interaction between the plan and the intervention. This interaction seems to be inspired by considerations other than purely practical. Which ones? We compare these projects to exercises: careful interventions in a controlled setting. Attention to material and detail is possible, and the limitations of the mission encourage precision and efficiency. Residents are a specific ingredient in this exercise. They are not fictional characters, but flesh and blood people, with sometimes pronounced desires and wants. They too are components of the exercise. In this mission, their lives coincide with the playground of the architecture.
